The Theremin is unlike any other instrument in the world. Invented in 1920 by Soviet scientist Léon Theremin, it is played by moving the hands through two high-frequency electromagnetic fields: the vertical antenna controls pitch (closer = higher) and the horizontal loop controls volume (closer = quieter).
