We never see in scripture Jesus calling Mary “mother”. He never called her mother, but woman. So why should we call Mary something Jesus did not? According to Jewish Custom it was the expectation of the firstborn to care for the welfare of his widowed mother. Jesus chose to leave the welfare of his widowed mother to John, who was a believer and was present, rather than entrusting her to His half brothers, who were not believers at the time and who were not even present at His crucifixion.
